SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING

When I was a child, I used to pray at night for homeless people to have something soft to sleep on to find some moment of comfort. Maybe that’s a strange thing for a child to pray for, but I just thought how terrible it was for them to have to sleep on the ground. For some reason, this memory came back to me when I was living at Anna Heyward and Graham’s house. Because my machine was packed away in a U-Haul, I was sitting at Anna Heyward’s sewing station trying to come up with an idea of what to create. My attempts at starting a clothing line, Flawed, had fizzled, mostly because I eventually realized how difficult it was to sew clothes. But I had settled firmly on the notion that I should create something that would lead to a commercial endeavor—or perhaps just a side hustle.

My law career was in limbo (again) at that point, for reasons I’ll address later. But honestly, I wasn’t ready to start practicing. In the years since I had left law school, and having filmed four seasons of Southern Charm, I saw my law career as something I would fall back on later. Yes, I was determined to get sworn in as a lawyer in the state of South Carolina, I just wasn’t ready to settle into being a lawyer. I had never forgotten Akim’s advice to me four years earlier, which boiled down to: Enjoy being on television now; you can always be a lawyer later. Indeed, it seemed wasteful to me to not use the platform I had developed since being on the show. My law degree was an insurance policy; it would be there when I needed it. But my status and my platform were likely more fleeting. They wouldn’t be around forever, so why shouldn’t I take advantage of them now?

Except I didn’t know how to take advantage of them. Which was why I was sitting at Anna Heyward’s sewing station, wracking my brain for a viable idea. The one that popped in there was to start sewing portable sleeping mats for homeless people and develop some kind of charity around giving them out. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to send me to the store that day to look for materials. I bought faux leather, vinyl, thread, and whatever else I thought would be useful for a sleep mat. Back at the house, I started to experiment with some designs, but I couldn’t make any work. Maybe I wasn’t good enough… or maybe it was just a bad idea.

I grew frustrated. I needed to complete something, but what? Then I thought, How about a pillow? I knew how to make those from my home economics class way back in seventh grade. I went out to the U-Haul, where I was keeping most of my stuff, and grabbed some shirts I didn’t wear and used them for fabric, cutting them into squares. I sat down at the machine and went to work.
